DisplayCase of student projects.

I began teaching the exhibition project course at UofT in 2009 after the sudden death of Cheryl Meszaros. The course was a full year capstone course that asked students to work on live projects. Cheryl’s innovation had been to move from a single exhibition done as a class to supporting multiple projects in multiple modalities in partnership with a wide range of exhibitions.

In 2009-10, I co-taught the course with Jennifer Carter. We wanted to support the students in completing the projects they had begun with Cheryl but had to re-invent the course pedagogy as we didn’t have access to her course notes. Together, we supervised 15 Graduating Exhibition Projects and Major Research Papers. After this year, we stopped supervising research papers through the class.

In 2010-11, I supervised 12 graduating projects.

In 2011-12, I supervised 9 graduating projects.

In 2012-13, there were 14 graduating projects.

In 2013-14, there were 12 graduating projects.

In 2014-15, there were 14 graduating projects.

In 2010-11, Heather Anderson and Martha Kroeker, developed an online archive of the student exhibition projects as their capstone exhibition. The site DISPLAY[CASE] was hosted at displaycase.ischool.utoronto.ca and their version of the site ran from 2011-2016. A snapshot of their page from 2012 can be found on the wayback machine here.

In 2016-17, Orvis Starkweather updated the site and its functionality. Orvis also prepared thorough documentation for the maintenance and updating of the site. A snapshot of their page can be found on the wayback machine here.

I taught the course for the last time in 2018-19. That year we ran 21 Exhibition Projects.

In 2021, my contract to teach at the Faculty was not renewed and I transferred ownership of the website to the museum studies program. In 2022, the program deleted the site. I’ve recreated an archive of the projects I supervised here but this portfolio lacks the functionality and interactivity of either version of the DISPLAY[CASE].
